1. Buy Used

This can apply for many things in your life – clothing, electronics, books, and more. Whatever the scenario might be, always try to look for a more eco-friendly alternative. For example, if you are looking to replace your laptop because it isn’t running as well as it used to, try finding a newer-used laptop that is in great condition instead of buying a brand new one. Not only will the earth thank you, but so will your wallet.

2. Use Reusable Bags, Cups, Straws, and Utensils

This is one of the easiest ways to go green. Many stores sell reusable bags for less than a dollar, and you can oftentimes find reusable products being given out for free as “swag” by companies. As for reusable straws, since gaining popularity the past few years, you find them in many stores and don’t have to go out of your way to purchase them. Often you can choose between silicone or metal, and if you aren’t able to find reusable straws, try looking for compostable ones, which are the next best thing. A final note, try to bring utensils from home instead of using plastic ones that are often given out by restaurants. 

3. Consider Eating Plant-Based

Switching to a plant-based diet can help the environment in a huge way. Not only does it reduce water and land use, but it also lowers pollution, slows deforestation, and reduces the destruction of topsoil. The biggest way meat impacts the environment is through the amount of water it takes to produce it. For perspective, it takes 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of meat but only 25 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of wheat. Can’t fathom the idea of giving up meat? Try just going meat-free for one day a week for a year, by doing so you could save 462 days of water for personal use.

4. Start Composting

Composting your vegetable scraps can help the environment in big ways, so much so that cities such as San Francisco, Boulder, Seattle, and Portland have all started their own composting and recycling programs. When you compost, you help save water, conserve landfill space, reduce methane gas in landfills, reduce the need for commercial fertilizers, control soil erosion, and more. 

5. Shop Local

It’s easy to understand that by buying local, fewer emissions are produced in the process of getting it from the farm to your table. Vehicles drive fewer miles and you get to benefit from fresher produce while supporting local farmers and businesses. If you want to go the extra mile, consider even growing your own produce right in your own backyard. 

6. Travel Less

We all love our vacations, but have you considered staying home for the holidays or taking one less vacation every year? Air travel is a quick and easy way to fill the atmosphere with more CO2 emissions. The more you travel, the less of an impact all you other go-green efforts make, if any. By staying home and vacationing locally, you help save tons in electricity, fuel, waste disposal, and more.
